A first medical oncology consultation establishes exactly what the diagnosis is and what the treatment options are. This involves reviewing the pathology report and, where necessary, requesting review of the tissue blocks or additional immunohistochemistry or molecular testing; assessing the stage of disease from imaging and arranging further scans if staging is incomplete; assessing the patient's general fitness, other medical conditions and current medications; and then discussing the realistic treatment options, what each involves, and what the expected side effects and monitoring requirements are. Patients are encouraged to bring a family member and to ask questions before agreeing to any plan.
